Don't Run a Microwave on Empty14/12/2011
Running a microwave on empty can cause serious damage and often results in magnetron failure.
When food is placed in the oven, microwave energy generated by the magnetron is absorbed. When no food is in the oven, there is nothing to absorb the energy. The energy bounces around the cavity as shown in the illustration and is channelled back through the waveguide. This can cause arcing, fire and may burn out the magnetron.
While this may seem obvious, it never hurts to remind your staff and operators of the dangers of running a microwave on empty.
